I am organizing my first 5k race! It's turned out to be a second job; but I'm really having lots of fun planning it.
The race I'm organizing is the fourth annual Brown Play School Run to Mama 5k & Kids' Fun Run. The race is on Sunday, May 5th 2013 at 9am and starts/ends at Rumford Center in Rumford, RI. Walkers and participants with strollers are welcome. This year a portion of the proceeds will benefit Hasbro Childrens Hospital.
What's this about a kids' fun run? Young'ins will have a chance to stretch their legs around 10am and get ribbons/medals for their effort. For recovery, the kids will have a chance to enjoy the "original recovery drink" - chocolate milk, provided by Munroe Dairy. Don't worry grown-ups, you can have some too.
Visit the Brown Play School website today for information about Brown Play School, the race and the race's sponsors or go directly to the registration page to sign up now! Only seven days left before the price goes up! (as of posting date, 25 March 2013).
Now, on to the preview:
Where's the Race?
The race starts at historic Rumford Center - where baking soda was invented. The pre-registration and post race activities will take place in the rear parking lot in the area occupied by the local farmer's market during the summer. That's where we'll have tents, tables, snacks and activities for kids. Under the tents, sponsors will have the opportunity to offer insights into their products and services, and in some cases, provide samples (e.g. active release therapy, massage, etc.). The race itself starts on Greenwood Avenue.
The Course
You will wind through beautiful Rumford in a counter-clockwise loop. You'll start at one end of Rumford Center (see green starting icon on map) and head Northwest on Greenwood. At the end of Greenwood, you'll turn left on Hoyt and run by one of the oldest golf courses in New England, Wannamoisset CC. At the end of Hoyt, you'll turn right and go down fast-paced Bourne Avenue, to historic Roger Williams Avenue (yes, where Roger Williams first settled). You will have traveled about a mile just after you turn the corner onto RW. From there the course crosses over Broadway and continues on Centre Street to Pawtucket Avenue. By the time you reach Pawtucket, you will traveled 2.3 miles - mostly downhill! Enjoy that briefly as Pawtucket Avenue will challenge your legs and your lungs on your way to the crest just before rejoining Greenwood Avenue. Greenwood initially offers a brief reprieve, so take advantage of it to gather momentum for the final quarter mile to the finish!
A water station will be positioned around mile 2 on Centre Street. We plan to have one water station; unless unseasonably warm weather makes us consider a second station.
Below are the course map and elevation profile taken from my Garmin (the elevation may not be exact; but the relative differences are worth noting):
Look for announcements on Facebook and "Like" the school's Facebook Page to stay up to date. You can also search hashtag, #bps5k2013 on Twitter for updates as well (use this hashtag if you want to tweet about the event on race day). In the coming weeks, I will be leading "training runs" for those already registered (or anyone else for that matter), so you can get acclimated to the course and, well...just to have some fun.
Overall, this is a beautiful course with great community atmosphere. We've had phenomenal local business support in the past and are now receiving support from businesses in surrounding areas in RI and MA...and California (Earthsake, Inc. in Berkeley, CA)!! For a full-list of sponsors, please visit Brown Play School's website. We are very grateful to our sponsors and several donors for what is turning out to be a great Spring time community event! I hope to see you there!
